Manuka Honey

Manuka Honey is simply honey which has only been made by a Manuka Tree.

Manuka tree is native to New Zealand.  Manuka Honey differs from Generic Honey because it is significantly higher in an anti-bacterial compound called Methylglyoxal (MG).   This compound has been known to promote the health of the digestive system and help wounds heal.

Manuka Honey also contains a number of other known bio-active antibacterial components, which when combined with Methylglyoxal (MG) gives manuka honey it’s very powerful anti-bacterial properties.

Because many of these compounds are sensitive to farming methods, heat and light, then the quantities of these compounds of Manuka Honey can vary dramatically from one source of Manuka Honey to the other.

The Unique Manuka Factor or UMF, represents the Total Antibacterial Power of a batch of Manuka Honey.  (To get more information on the honey rating system, please click here.)

The higher the UMF factor, it indicates higher UMF abilities.

The UMF factor is often displayed on the jar and is considred to be a reliable medical measure of its antibacterial properties.

As most Manuka honey producers heat the honey to process it, many bio-active components are destroyed in the processing.

Manuka Honey V Raw HoneyThe top health Benefits of Manuka honey are:

  • Promote Digestive System Health
  • Helps to Heal Wounds
  • Powerful Antibacterial Properties
  • Unique Manuka Factor

Raw Honey

Raw honey can be made from any plants and it is simply honey which has not been heated.

This means that any heat sensitive bio-active compounds are not destroyed in the processing.

Raw Honey BenefitsExamples of these bio-active compounds are:

  • Bee-Defensin Which is a powerful anti-bacterial agent, which is know to promote digestive health.
  • Caffeic Acid Another phenolic compound which is a powerful anti-oxidant.
  • Catechins Another phenolic compound which is also found in green tea.

Catechins are also a known powerful anti-oxidant and are associated with protecting the cardio-vascular system.

Due to the natural variation in honey, there no guarantees as to how much of these beneficial compounds will be present in each jar of raw honey.

This makes it’s potency less reliable than Manuka Honey.

So in short, Manuka Honey is a powerful anti-bacterial agent, which is tested for potency. Whereas raw honey has much more beneficial compounds, but the quantity is not measured.

  1. Thanks for explaining the differences between the Manuka and raw honey. I recently bought a book about the health benefits of honey, and I’m reading as much as I can on the topic at the moment. I haven’t actually used and Manuka honey just yet because the one available at my local health food store was insanely expensive. Is there a particular brand you would recommend? Thanks!

    1. Hi Mark, good on you for showing an interest in your health and honey.  I really applaud you for that.  If you enjoy the book, would you mind recommending it to me?  I am always happy to learn new information about honey.  Manuka honey in a health food shop, yes, you are right it can get really expensive.  If you are just after a general health booster then I recommend a honey with a UMF 5+ rating (it will be one of the cheaper ones there).  That way you can have some and see how your body responds.  Many people have mixed and varied reactions the first time.  See how you go.  Please feel free to send me any updates as you progress. I am always happy to hear more about honey and what people think and experience using Manuka honey.
